Afternoon Ladies/Gents

Its a boiling day in the UK at the moment, reaching almost 33 degrees centigrade ;D
Unfortunately it has caused a bit of an issue with a machine I built my brother yesterday.

Basically, I am unfamiliar with the bios on this ASUS motherboard and I am trying to turn off the turbo boost on the FX-6300. Its getting far to hot in there and is also causing stuttering problems with some games.

I just want the CPU to run at a stable 3.5ghz consistently. I may then under clock it to keep the temps super low.

Any ideas guys?

I would expect the option to switch it off is in the bios.

But I would look at why the cpu is getting hot and do something about that.

Even the stock AMD cooling solution can handle a FX6300 at full speed.

So your build has issues !

Thank you mate. I'm pretty sure that the temperature problem comes from the CPU boosting to 4.1ghz on a stock cooler! I have a FX-8320 (3.5Ghz) and as soon as I turned off cool and quiet and turned of turbo, it never goes above 60 Degrees and never needs to under-clock itself to cool down.

FX processors just run silly hot, and the stock coolers aren't good atall.

Just can't find the option in the new machines BIOS

Consider investing in an aftermarket cooler--doesn't have to be expensive. Also consider putting a fan ontop of the VRM, that motherboard is not built to handle the FX-6300.

What makes you say that the motherboard isn't built for the FX-6300.

I just want to turn off turbo! It will solve my problem....

It's got a 4+1 power phase--what power supply are you using? You're putting a lot of stress on the VRM, even though it on paper supports the socket. It also has got no VRM heatsink.

Turbo Boost can be found in BIOS, inside advanced.

I probably need to use get a proper ATX power supply. I am using a normal sized one that I had lying around (Corsair VS 550)

You're better off setting the boost function to the same speed as the base clock mate.(17.5) rather than disabling completely.

Disabling turbo also disables power saving & will stop the cpu down clocking under low load.

windows power management is you best option to downclock with stability. go to control panel>power options> change plan settings> change advanced power settings> Processor power management> set minimum processor state to 5%.

Now the fx-6300 will not run at 5% of its capacity but it will push down as far is it will go. This has drastically reduced my cpu temp with a stock cooler. You will still see the heating issue when doing anything processor intensive but it keeps it at good temp when its idling or running low end processes.

If you want an easier way to control boost and non-boost clock frequencies and voltage you can get AMD Overdrive to control your processor and other things.

Your cpu is likely throttling under load thus causing the lags and stuttering. Your motherboard is the problem. Disabling turbo is not going help because it probably can't even reach turbo speeds anyway. You can try underclocking/undervolting, but the only real solution is getting a new better motherboard.
